Dear Friends,

Microsoft®, specifically Steve Ballmer, made two announcements during recent weeks which may have significant impact on the company, its customers, shareholders, and competitors. The first was a widely expected announcement regarding Microsoft's® long awaited reorganizing into a “Devices and Services” company. The second was a surprise to many as Steve announced that he will retire during the coming year. The combination of these two events may increase the impact beyond that which either may have by itself. Steve will likely remain at the helm to oversee most of the organizational changes he orchestrated, but the completed re-org should create a good starting point for a new CEO. Both changes are arguably long overdue but implementing them simultaneously may increase their impact. From a licensing perspective I can foresee continued changes and updates to Microsoft's® online and on premise offerings, requiring us to be vigilant and prudent as how we mitigate through these murky waters. Let’s hope the impact is positive for the software market and for us as end users.
